Preposition

Definition:- A preposition is a word like in, to, with, above, below, or for, etc. It usually comes before a noun or pronoun and expressing a relation to another word in the sentence.

Example:- The mobile is on the table. ( In this sentence ‘on’ is a preposition.)

Under, in, of, for, to, by, over, since, from, with, at, into, along, among, but, besides etc. are some of the common prepositions.

Some common prepositions are as follow:-

Ø  Above

·         Up in a list.

·         Above the abstract noun: such as love, honesty, cruelty etc.

·         Above the level of some surface.

1.      There is a mirror above the washbasin.

(वाशबेसिन पर आईना है)

2.      They live above us.

(वे हमारे ऊपर रहते है)

3.      My name is above yours in the list.

(सूची में मेरा नाम तुम्हारे नाम के ऊपर है)

4.      An inspector is above a sub-inspector.

(निरीक्षक उपनिरीक्षक के ऊपर होता है)

5.      I value my family above everything else.

(मै बाकी किसी भी चीज़ से ज्यादा मेरे परिवार को महत्व देता हूँ)

6.      He is above stealing.

(वह चोरी करने की परिधि के बाहर है)

7.      Money is above love.

(पैसा प्यार से ऊपर है)

8.      Only her eyes were above water.

(केवल उसकी आँखे पानी के ऊपर थी)

Ø  After

1.      Do you believe in the life after death?

(क्या मृत्यु के बाद के जीवन पर तुम्हारा विश्वास है?)

2.      After marriage, he became poor.

(शादी के बाद वह गरीब हो गया)

3.      Who was running after you?

(तुम्हारे पीछे कौन दौड़ रहा था?)

4.      I will meet you after 10.

(मै तुमसे 10 बजे के बाद मिलूँगा)

5.      I reached after them.

(मै उनके बाद पहुंचा)

6.      She was after her madam for getting some help.

(वह मदद पाने के लिए अपनी मेडम के पीछे पड़ गई थी)

7.      He was unnecessarily after that girl.

(वो बेवजह उस लड़की के पीछे पड़ा हुआ था)

8.      My mother has denied thrice but I am still after her.

(मेरी मम्मी ने तीन बार मना कर दिया है, पर मै अभी भी उनके पीछे पड़ा हुआ हूँ)

Ø  Across

·         Across something

1.      My office is just across the road.

(मेरा कार्यालय सड़क के बिलकुल उस पार है)

2.       Can you swim across this river?

(क्या तुम इस नदी को तैरकर पार कर सकते हो?)

3.      My institute is across the road.

(मेरा इंस्टिट्यूट सड़क के उस पार है)

4.      There was a girl standing across the road.

(एक लड़की सड़क के उस पार खड़ी थी)

Ø  Against

1.      Everyone was against that decision.

(हर व्यक्ति उस निर्णय के विरोध में था)

2.      It is against law to drive without licence.

(लाइसेन्स की बिना गाड़ी चलाना कानून के विरुद्ध है)

3.      He was against me.

(वह मेरे खिलाफ था)

Ø  Along

·         With a person/thing

1.      A road goes along the river.

(नदी के किनारे से एक रास्ता जाता है)

2.      You will get this pen along the mobile.

(तुम्हे ये पेन मोबाइल के साथ मिलेगा)

3.      Have you brought your dairy along?

(क्या तुम अपनी डायरी साथ लाए हो?)

4.      Will you come along?

(क्या तुम साथ आओगे?)

Ø  Around

·         चारो ओर / आसपास

1.      Photographers gathered around him.

(छायाचित्रकार उसके आसपास जमा हो गए)

2.      He is around thirty.

(वह लगभग तीस साल का है)

3.      People were around me, yet I was lonely.

(लोग मरे चारो ओर थे, फिर भी मै तन्हा था)

Ø  At

·         With point of time.

·         With small places.

·         With night/noon.

·         To tell the cost of something.

·         In any festival / event.

1.      He dropped me at the station.

(उसने मुझे स्टेशन पर छोड़ दिया)

2.      The class starts at 6 ‘o’ clock.

(कक्षा छह बजे शुरू होती है)

3.      I met him at the airport.

(मै उससे हवाई अड्डे पर मिला)

4.      There is someone at the door.

(दरवाजे पर कोई है)

5.      He lives at New Ashok Nagar.

(वह न्यू अशोक नगर में रहता है)

6.      I was born at 2.

(मै दो बजे पैदा हुआ था)

7.      He will come home at 10 A.M.

(वह सुबह 10 बजे घर आएगा)

8.      I stayed at a hotel.

(मै एक होटल में रुका)

9.      He was standing at the bus stop.

(वो बस स्टाप पर खड़ा था)

10.  Sonu works at a shop.

(सोनू एक दुकान पर काम करता है)

11.  I was there at noon.

(मै वहाँ दोपहर में था)

12.  We study at night.

(हम रात में पढ़ते है)

13.  This fruit is selling at Rs.10 Per Kg.

(यह फल 10 रुपये किलो बिक रहा है)

14.  I am buying apple at Rs.50 per kg.

(मै सेब 50 रूपये किलो खरीद रहा हूँ)

15.  I will come home at Holi.

(मै होली पर घर आऊँगा)

16.  She will come home at Diwali.

(वह दिवाली पर घर आएगी)

17.   I will go there at his birthday.

(मै उसके जन्मदिन पर वहाँ जाऊँगा)

Ø  Before

·         पहले

·         सामने

1.      Think before speaking.

(बोलने से पहले सोचो)

2.      This bus will reach before time.

(यह बस समय से पहले पहुंचेगी)

3.      Before marriage, he was rich.

(शादी से पहले वह धनी था)

Ø  Behind

1.      Who is behind your success?

(तुम्हारी सफलता के पीछे कौन है?)

2.      Our house is behind the post office.

(हमारा घर डाकखाने के पीछे है)

Ø  Below

·         Below in a list

·         Below the abstract noun; such as love, honesty, cruelty etc)

1.      They live below us.

(वे हमारे नीचे रहते है)

2.      Your name is below mine in the list.

(सूची में आपका नाम मेरे नीचे है)

3.      Money is below love.

(पैसा प्यार के नीचे है)

4.      His mouth was below water but the nose was above.

(उसका मुहँ पानी के नीचे था पर नाक ऊपर)

Ø  Beside

1.      He came and sat beside me.

(वह मेरी बगल में आकर बैठा)

2.       He was sitting beside me.

(वह मेरे बगल में बैठा हुआ था)

Ø  Besides

1.      Do you read any other newspaper besides the Times of India?

(क्या तुम टाइम्स आफ इंडिया के अलावा दूसरा कोई अखबार पढ़ते हो?)

2.      The shop opens every day besides Sunday.

(रविवार सहित दुकान प्रतिदिन खुली रहती है)

Ø  Between

·         Between two objects

1.      This bus runs between Delhi and Mumbai.

(यह बस दिल्ली और मुंबई के बीच चलती है)

2.      We will have to choose between a fridge and a TV – we cannot buy both at present.

(हमे फ्रिज और टीवी इनमे से एक चुनना होगा – फिलहाल हम दोनों नही खरीद सकते)

Ø  Beyond

·         Very far, not visible

·         Beyond something that is abstract; neither touch nor see

1.      There is a small town beyond this mountain.

(इस पर्वत के पार एक छोटा गाँव है)

2.      There is a small temple beyond this mountain.

(इस पहाड़ के उस पार एक छोटा मन्दिर है)

3.      This train will not go beyond Delhi.

(यह ट्रेन दिल्ली के बाहर नही जायेगी)

4.      What is beyond this river?

(इस नदी के पार क्या है)

5.      There is nothing beyond love.

(प्यार के पार कुछ नही है)

Ø  By

·         Travel by some vehicle

·         With time only in future indefinite tense

·         In passive voice

·         Next to

1.      I prefer travelling by train.

(मै रेल से यात्रा करना पसंद करता हूँ)

2.      We are going by car.

(हम कार से जा रहे है)

3.      I was taught by him.

(मुझे उनके द्वारा पढ़ाया गया)

4.      I will leave by 3’o’ clock.

(मै 3 बजे तक निकल जाऊँगा)

5.      He was sitting by me.

(वो मेरे बगल में बैठा हुआ था)

Ø  During

1.      They lived abroad during the war.

(युद्ध के दौरान वे विदेश में रहे)

2.      I was in Delhi during vacations.

(छुट्टियों के दौरान मै दिल्ली में था)

3.       He goes swimming every day during summer.

(गर्मियों के मौसम में वह प्रतिदिन तैरने जाता है)

4.      I can meet her during the break.

(मै उससे ब्रेक के दौरान मिल सकता हूँ)

Ø  Except

1.      The shop opens every day except Sunday.

(रविवार के अलावा दुकान हर रोज खुली रहती है)

2.      Everyone liked this plan except one person.

(एक व्यक्ति को छोडकर यह योजना हरेक को पसंद आई)

3.      She can scold anyone except me.

(वह मुझे छोडकर किसी को भी डाट सकती है)

Ø  For

(वो कई दिनों से कोशिश कर रही है)

(वह कल मुंबई से वापस आया)

(वे पार्क से आये)

(मै कल से काम करूंगा)

(हम बस में चढ़े)

(वो कमरे में जा रहा है)

Ø  Within

·         Within a time period

1.      I can run one kilometre within ten minutes.

(मै एक किलोमीटर दस मिनट के अंदर दौड़ सकता है)

2.      I will come back within an hour.

(मै एक घंटे के अंदर वापिस आऊंगा)

3.      I will come within 5 minutes.

(मै 5 मिनट में आ जाऊँगा)

4.      They have come back within just 4 days.

(वे 4 दिनों में ही वापिस आ गए है)

1.      Excuse me, you are standing on my foot.

(क्षमा करे, आप मेरे पैर पर खड़े है)

(क्या आप रविवार को खाली हो?)

3.      Pencil is kept on the table.

(पेंसिल टेबल पर रखी हुई है)

4.      I am sitting on the Elephant.

(मै हाथी पर बैठा हुआ हूँ)

5.      I went on Monday.

(मै सोमवार को गया)

6.      He came on 20^th Dec’2017.

(वह 20 दिस्मबर 2017 को आया)

7.      I was standing on the right.

(मै दायीं और खड़ा था)

8.      He was standing on the left.

(वह बायीं और खड़ा था)

Ø  Over

1.      There was a notice over the door.

(दरवाजे पर एक सूचना थी)

2.      He put his hands over his eyes.

(उसने अपने हाथ आँखों पर रख लिये)

Ø  Through

·         To see through some object

·         To move through a structure with limits on top, bottom and both sides.

1.      The same thought is running through my head.

(मेरे दिमाग में भी वही विचार घूम रहा है)

2.      We went through the forest.

(हम जंगल में से गए)

3.      I was passing through a street.

(मै एक गली से गुजर रहा था)

4.       Water is passing through this pipe.

(पानी इस पाइप से गुजर रहा था)

(मै साढ़े चार बजे तक तुम्हारी राह देखूंगा)

(यह काम हम सोमवार तक समाप्त नही कर सकते है)

3.      I will work till 9.

(मै 9 बजे तक काम करूंगा)

4.      She was here until Sunday.

(वो सन्डे तक यहाँ थी)

(बारिश रुकने तक हम पेड़ के नीचे खड़े रहे)

Ø  Up

1.      Can you climb up this tree?

(क्या आप इस पेड़ पर चढ़ सकते हो?)

2.      A cockroach ran up the wall.

(तिलचट्टा दिवार पर चढ़ गया)

Ø  Up to

·         Up to certain distances

(पाँच सौ तक लोग इस हाल में बैठ सकते है)

·         More than two objects but not given; how many

1.      He was amongst the crowd.

(वह भीड़ में था)

2.      My friend was amongst many people.

(मेरा दोस्त कई लोगो के बीच था)

Ø  Out of

·         Out of certain numbers

·         To go out/leave some place

1.      I am getting out of my home.

(मै घर से बाहर निकल रहा हूँ)

2.      She has gone out of Mumbai.

(वह मुम्बई से बाहर जा चुकी है)

3.      Sonu scored 96 out of 100.

(सोनू ने 100 में से 96 नम्बर प्राप्त किये)

4.      There are only 56 students out of 100.

(100 में से केवल 56 ही छात्र है)

Ø  Ahead of

·         आगे

1.      I was ahead of mohan in the queue.

(मै लाइन में मोहन के आगे था)

2.      She is ahead of sonu in the queue.

(वो सोनू के आगे थी लाइन में)

Ø  Outside

1.      He was sitting outside the room.

(वो कमरे के बाहर बैठा हुआ था)

2.      She is outside the hall.

(वो हाल के बाहर है)

Ø  Inside

1.      Who is inside the room?

(कौन कमरे के अंदर है?)

2.      I was inside the hall.

(मै हाल के अंदर था)

Ø  Off

·         Leaving a surface

1.      I picked the mobile off the bed.

(मैने मोबाइल को बिस्तर से उठाया)

2.       I am wiping the dust off the screen.

(मै स्क्रीन से धूल हटा रहा हूँ)

3.      Monkey jumped off the tree.

(बंदर पेड़ से कूदा)

4.      Move the cup off the table.

(टेबल से कप हटा दो)

Ø  Since

·         ‘since’ is used for point of time when the sentences is in continuous form

1.      I have been studying since 2 ‘0’ clock.

(मै दो बजे से पढ़ रहा हूँ)

2.      She has been trying since Sunday.

(वह संडे से कोशिश कर रही है)

Ø  Via

·         विया/वाया (के रास्ते, से)

1.      This train will go to Mumbai via Delhi.

(यह ट्रेन दिल्ली होते हुए मुंबई जायेगी)

2.      I sent him my photos via Bluetooth.

(मैने उसे अपनी फोटो ब्लूटूथ से भेजी)

Ø  Opposite

·         उल्टा

·         ठीक सामने दूसरी तरफ

1.      He was standing opposite you.

(वो तुम्हारे सामने खड़ा था)

2.      His thinking is opposite yours.

(उसकी सोच तुम्हारी सोच से ठीक उलटी है)

Ø  Beneath/Underneath

·         Subject or Object fully touched

1.      My house is underneath your house.

(मेरा घर आपके नीचे है)

2.      Your photograph is beneath my book.

(तुम्हारी तस्वीर मेरी किताब के नीचे है)

Ø  Upon/Onto

·         A smaller object showing upwards movement to come on a bigger object

1.      He jumped onto the horse.

(वह कूद कर घोड़े पर बैठ गया)

2.      Broom came upon the table by itself.

(झाड़ू अपने आप टेबल पर आ गया)

Ø  Than

·         Used for comparison

1.      I am better than you.

(मै तुमसे बेहतर हूँ)

2.      She is more beautiful than you.

(वो तुमसे ज्यादा खुबसुरत है)

Ø  Throughout

·         सारा या पूरा

1.      I loved him throughout my life.

(मैने जिन्दगी भर उसे प्यार किया)

2.      They worked throughout the day.

(उन्होंने दिन भर काम किया)

Ø  Upwards

·         ऊपर की तरफ

1.      He threw the stone upwards.

(उसने पत्थर ऊपर की तरफ फेका)

2.      I threw his pen upwards.

(मैने उसका पेन उपर की तरफ फेका)

Ø  Downwards

·         नीचे की तरफ

1.      He threw my pen downwards.

(उसने मेरा पेन नीचे की तरफ फेका)

2.      She threw my mobile downwards.

(उसने मेरा मोबाइल नीचे की तरफ फेका)

Ø  Ago

·         पहले (समय के साथ)

1.      She came here two years ago.

(वह दो साल पहले यहाँ आयी थी)
